Engagement & Communication for Environmental Sensitivities
Engagement and Communication Practices with Persons who have Environmental Sensitivities
Disability engagement and communication requires some planning and thought, especially when you are working toward being a church where everyone feels welcome and a sense of belonging. Many people have not thought about ways to make interactions with those of us who are disabled easier and more relaxed. To start with, remember that each person is unique and all of us are made in the image of God. If you encounter a disabled person who may need assistance, ask if help is wanted and exactly how you can help.
What is environmental sensitivity?
This category includes individuals with multiple chemical sensitivity, asthma, and other severe allergies to fragrances, pollen, and other allergens.
When you are with a person who has an environmental sensitivity
Believe the person and take their concern seriously, understanding that even a small exposure may lead to days of being sick or to a life-threatening reaction.
Avoid scented personal care and laundry products.
Offer support so that the person does not have to make all the needed arrangements on their own.
Educate yourself and help the congregation understand that reducing fragrance use supports everyone’s health.
Advocate for posted allergy alert signs and pre-event reminders of what to avoid.
Suggest the use of artificial altar arrangements if the use of flowers keeps some congregants from being able to attend worship.
Be willing to check out a space, e.g. the restroom, to detect fragrances before the person uses the space.
Work with church staff to eliminate the use of scented products and chemicals and to improve ventilation.
Research safe alternatives to typical products.
Offer virtual meeting options.
Schedule as much as possible out of doors.
