Note: These are guidelines only; please consult ADA and state standards before making modifications
a) Signage
● Parking spaces clearly marked with access symbol on pavement & on vertical signs at least 60” high
● All signs mounted at uniform height between 54" and 66" above floor on latch side of doorways
● Signage in 5/8" to 2" raised block uppercase sans serif numbers/ letters with marked color contrast
b) Parking
● Accessible spaces are at least 8' wide with adjacent 5' access aisle – 2 spaces can share 1 aisle
● At least one accessible space is van accessible: 11’ width with 5' access aisle, or 8’ with 8’ aisle
● Accessible parking spaces are close to registration, don't require moving behind parked cars
● At least one, plus 1 out of every 25 spaces are accessible
● Accessible spaces have level (1:48 or less) and stable, firm, & slip-resistant surface, are well-lighted
c) Pathways, Access Route
● Access route surface (sidewalk or pathway) to accessible entrances/ areas stable, firm, & slip-resistant
● Pathways are at least 36" wide, have detectable edges, and a 60” wide passing area every 200’ or less
● If there are curbs in the route, there are curb ramps at least 36"wide with a 36” long level landing
● Changes in level are no greater than ¼”; changes from ¼” to ½” are beveled
● Grates run perpendicular to pathway; openings are less than ½” wide
d) Ramps
● Ramps have a maximum incline of 1:12, preferably 1:20
● Ramps have a minimum width of 36" with non-slip surface
● Ramps have a 2" curb along both sides or lowest railing is no more than 4“ above ramp surface
● Maximum rise per run is 30"; a 60” long level platform is provided for every 30” of rise if longer
● Railings are 30-34" high on both sides of ramp and extend 12" beyond top and bottom of ramp
● Any rise greater than 1:20 on an access route is treated as a ramp
e) Doorways
● Doors are 36" wide, with a minimum clear opening of 32”
● 60" long level platforms are provided at entry door if the door pulls open, with an 18" -24" space on pull side of door so person has access to reach and pull the door
● Thresholds no higher than ¼”, or ½” with a ¼” beveled edge on each side
● Force needed to open exterior door preferable no more than 10 lbs., for interior doors 5 lbs., with hardware easily operable – automatic door opener recommended for primary entrances
f) Tables & space for wheelchair
● Path of travel between furniture is at least 36”
● Table/ counter height between 28 & 34”, underside clearance 27”, toe clearance 25”
● Wheelchair spaces are at least 33" x 48" forward access, 33" x 60" side access, with companion seating
● Spaces are level, next to aisles, distributed throughout room with view when others stand
g) Restrooms
● At least one accessible gender-neutral restroom, or one accessible restroom for each sex, per floor
● Restroom has 60" turning space; stall doors are at least 32" wide & stall door swings out into room
● Wheelchair accessible stall is at least 56" deep x 60" wide, with 33 - 36" high 42” long wall-mounted grab bars next to & 36” long bar at back of toilet for side/assisted transfers, and toilet height 17" -19"
● Ambulatory accessible stall is at least 36" wide & 48" deep from toilet to door, with toilet 17 - 19" high, and 42” long grab bars (starting 12” from rear walls) or armrests mounted on both sides of the stall
● Sink maximum height 34”, with 27" clearance from floor to underside of sink, & drainpipes insulated
● Faucet controls are operable with a closed fist and spout no more than 17” from front of sink
● Soap, paper towels, etc. no higher than 48”, lowest edge of mirror 40”, waste disposal near sink
● At least one shower has no threshold, grab bars mounted between 33” and 36” from floor, hand-held shower, and transfer bench installed or available at 17 – 19” height
